Stones like Mahenge Spinel , with its flamboyant color and rare purity, have become iconic since their recent discovery in Tanzania, as have spessartite garnets, also known as Mandarin or Fanta garnet. Natural Alexandrite , with its unique optical phenomenon that changes color from green to red depending on the light, or Padparadscha sapphire , this extremely rare pinkish-orange sapphire, are now reaching new heights at auction. The same trend applies to Tsavorite , this bright, vivid green garnet, much rarer than an emerald of equivalent quality. But rarity alone is not enough to guarantee performance. We know that a well-cut, heated 5-carat Royal Blue Ceylon sapphire with no visible inclusions is a better investment than an unheated, poorly proportioned sapphire with visible inclusions. I advise against colorless diamonds for investment purposes, due to the overly saturated and speculative market. Natural colored diamonds, on the other hand, remain in a class of their own: rare, sought-after, and historically successful.

In France, the resale of an unmounted gemstone by an individual is subject to the flat-rate tax on precious objects if the sale price exceeds €5,000. This tax amounts to 6% of the sale price, to which is added a CRDS of 0.5%, for a total of 6.5%. It must be paid via tax form No. 2091, within one month of the sale.
However, it is possible and more advantageous to opt for the capital gains regime on the sale of movable property (form no. 2092), provided that you can justify the date and price of acquisition with an invoice. This regime offers a total exemption after 22 years of ownership.
